Common questions

What am I actually trading when I trade XAU/USD?

You are trading the US dollar price of one troy ounce of gold, quoted as XAU/USD. One standard lot is 100 oz and one pip is 0.01, so a move from 4275.0 to 4276.0 is 100 pips. It is a margin product, not physical delivery, and your rand result depends on both the gold move and the USD/ZAR rate.

Why does the gold price move so much around US data releases?

Gold is priced in dollars and reacts to US interest rate expectations, inflation data and the dollar itself, so US releases move it quickly. Liquidity thins just before a release and widens just after, which is when slippage is most likely. Position size, not prediction, is what keeps those moments survivable.

Does the rand gold price move the same way as XAU/USD?

Not exactly. The rand gold price is XAU/USD multiplied by USD/ZAR, so a falling rand lifts the rand price even when dollar gold is flat, and a stronger rand does the opposite. If your account is in rand, your profit or loss reflects both legs, which is why the profit calculator asks for the USD/ZAR rate.

When is XAU/USD most liquid for a trader in South Africa?

Liquidity is deepest when the London and New York sessions overlap, which falls in the South African afternoon and early evening. The Asian session is quieter. Spreads and slippage depend on the session and on the broker's execution, so plan entries for the hours when you can actually watch the position.

Is gold trading a suitable way to protect savings in rand?

Gold can diversify a rand portfolio, but leveraged XAU/USD trading is not savings protection: leverage magnifies losses as well as gains, and you can lose more than you expect if a stop is gapped through. Keep speculative risk small relative to your savings, and treat any rand hedge as a separate, unleveraged decision.
